How to memorise a hadith

Small portions, aloud, in Arabic, every day.

  1. Understand it first. Never memorise words whose meaning you have not studied.
  2. Memorise the Prophet's words in Arabic. Learn the narrator's name and the source book alongside them.
  3. Break it into phrases. Repeat the first phrase aloud until it is firm, add the second, then join them. Continue to the end.
  4. Recite it to someone. A teacher or a study partner will catch the slips you cannot hear yourself.
  5. Write it from memory and check it against the text, letter by letter.
Study tip. Fix a time. Ten minutes after Fajr every day will carry you further than an hour once a week.
